"Hyperpunkt" by Richard Scott's Lightning Ensemble
Sound Anatomy SA013

Richard Scott - modular synthesisizer
David Birchall - acoustic guitar
Phillip Marks - drums and percussion
Sam Andreae - tenor saxophone etc (except 3,10 and 11)

We are literally over the moon to announce the forthcoming digital and CD release from Richard Scott's Lightning Ensemble, featuring Scott on modular synthesizer, David Birchall guitar, Phil Marks, drums and Sam Andreae on saxophone. Scott spent time in John Stevens' legendary group improvisation workshops in the 1980s and this release shows this influence to be alive and well in this music.

Despite being led by a synthesizer-player the group is very much acoustic rather than electronic in focus and is dedicated to what Scott calls a "hyper-interactive" style of play: very conversational collective formations made almost entirely of points rather than lines, in a very "English" manner; with aspects instead from groups such as the Spontaneous Muisc Ensemble, Music Improvisation Company etc. but with a distinctly Manchester flavour. At the heart of the group is Scott and percussionist Phillp Marks, whose collaboration goes back some 25, years (including as members of the astonishing Bark!) very ably augmented here by representatitives of a younger generaton of Manchester improvisers, David Birchall and Sam Andreae.

Recorded in two days in Salford, this record was 30 years in the making.
