Voutchkova/Thieke/Carroll make tactile, kinetic, luminous acoustic music; focused on aspects of timbre, tuning, and auditory/psycho-acoustic phenomena. Their debut album on Berlin’s Sound Anatomy label ”As Found” captures Voutchkova/Thieke/Carroll navigating with principled uncertainty between acoustic and electrical, discrete and continuous, unity and disparity.

The trio mines the interstice of all three permutational duos (Voutchkova/Thieke, Thieke/Carroll, Voutchkova/Carroll) of which exist as distinct performing entities; together in this trio they extend a common aesthetic of timbral and gestural ambiguity.

All three musicians live in Berlin where they are very active members of the city’s extraordinarily busy and creative improvising and post-echtzeitmusik scenes.

Biliana Voutchkova: violin/voice

Biliana Voutchkova is a thoroughly engaged composer-performer/interpreter whose work combines regular performances of major solo violin/ensemble works, new works by contemporary composers often written for her, and improvisation. Her research as a creative improviser spans the widest possible range of sound/music/movement and extends the sonic and technical capacities of her instrument evolving into the development of a highly individual musical language. Biliana lives in Berlin and appears at festivals and concert series worldwide. She works as a soloist and collaborates with the Splitter Orchestra, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, Ensemble Modern, Ensembles United Berlin, Mozaik, Zeitkratzer, LUX:NM and Sasha Waltz & Guests, among others. Recent/current projects include solo concerts at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, GAS, Mózg, Moving Music and Radar Festivals, the release of the solo album 'Modus of Raw", a concerts tour in the USA with Voutchkova/Thieke duo supported by the Goethe Institut, and performances for the festivals Klangwerkstatt, Documenta14, Wien Modern, Experimental Intermedia and Gent festival. Biliana received the Composition Stipend from the Berliner Senate in 2017 and grands from INM Berlin and the Trust for Mutual Understanding in New York in 2016.

Michael Thieke: clarinet

The Berlin-based clarinetist/composer/performer Michael Thieke is at home across a broad range of musical environments, such as experimental song forms, collectively composing projects, improvising collectives, and music on the fringes of jazz. He is exploring the minutiae of sound, timbre and noise, with a particular interest in microtonality and related sound phenomena, and with a preference for long-term collaborations and collective work.

Some of his current Projects are: The International Nothing (with Kai Fagaschinski), The Magic I.D. (with Christof Kurzmann, Kai Fagaschinski, Margareth Kammerer), The Pitch (with Boris Baltschun, Koen Nutters, Morten Olsen), Der lange Schatten (with Håvard Wiik, Antonio Borghini) and the Splitter Orchester. In 2012 Michael founded a duo with violin player Biliana Voutchkova. They work on improvisations focussing on microtonality and intimate, slow moving soundscapes, that sometimes have a rudimentary melodic character.

Michael Thieke was born 1971 in Düsseldorf/Germany. He moved to Berlin in 1993 , since 2000 he lives also part time in Rome.

Roy Carroll: electro-acoustic media

Roy Carroll is a musician and composer based in Berlin. His work encompasses improvisation, composition, music/choreographic collaboration and practical / experimental research, with porous borders in between. He works primarily with electro-acoustic media; diverse objects and materials interacting through amplification and signal processing to create multi-layered forms, orbiting around the kinetic nature of the transformation of electrical audio signals into disturbed air. Roy has been commissioned by groups such as Icebreaker, Dublin Guitar Quartet, Vox21 and The Whispering Gallery. He is one half of The Instrument with choreographer Maya M Carroll, with whom he has created over 20 works for the stage. He has toured / presented work throughout Europe, Canada, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, New Zealand.
